Tommy Smith is now in his 31st year of involvement with the Delgado Athletic Department, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Dolphins' Athletic programs. Smith began his career at DCC in 1981 as an assistant coach in both baseball and basketball. In 1986, Smith took over the reigns as Athletic Director from legendary Coach Louis "Rags" Scheuermann when Scheuermann retired to strictly coach baseball.
Prior to the 1990 basketball season, Smith was named Delgado’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach. His teams have earned numerous regional and conference titles through the years, including seven Region 23 tournament appearances. The Men’s Basketball teams have also claimed five Miss-Lou Conference Championships under Smith, the most recent in 2010. Smith was also named the 2010 Miss-Lou Coach of the Year.
Coach Smith served as the NJCAA Men’s Assistant Regional Director of Region 23 from 1996-2008 and as the Executive Director of the Miss-Lou Conference from 1996 to 2008. He is a member of the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches and a past President of the organization. He is member of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. Smith also serves as a consultant to the New Orleans Wheelchair Basketball Team.
Regionally and nationally Smith has served on committees and continues to be a source for organizations on the promotion of Junior College Athletics. Smith has been a member of the New Orleans Saints Chain Crew since 1989.
Today, Smith is one of the longest tenured coaches in the NJCAA Region XXIII Conference. He is a 1971 graduate of Brother Martin High School, where he was a member of the Crusaders’ back to back basketball state championship teams in 1970 and 1971. He was a Louisiana High School All-State performer in track in 1971. Smith attended Southeastern Louisiana University where he became a four year All Conference performer and a one time All-American in track and field. He was a member of the 1975 SLU National Track and Field Championship Team. Smith earned his B.S. degree from SLU in 1975 and earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of New Orleans in 1986.
Smith is married to the former Alicia Skinner of New Orleans. They have a 24 year old daughter Kristy Lynn Reimonenq. Coach Smith also has a 32 old son, Anthony Christian Smith of Slidell, LA.
