Now in his 35th season as the Head Baseball Coach at Delgado Community College, Scheuermann is continuing a proud family tradition while continuing to build an impressive record of achievements as one of Louisiana’s longest tenured and most respected baseball coaches.
In 2024, Scheuermann surpassed the late Tony Robichaux as the state's winningest college baseball coach with 1,178 career victories. He will be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in June 2025, joining his father "Rags" as one of only four father-son duos on the prestigious hall's roster.
Scheuermann made state history during a milestone-filled 2019 when he achieved his 1000th career victory as Head Coach at Delgado Community College with a 10-4 win over Coastal Alabama South on April 9 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. He is the first college coach in state history to achieve the 1000-win plateau at the same college and was the thirtieth coach in NJCAA history to reach the milestone. Additionally, Scheuermann was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association’s baseball coaches’ Hall of Fame in May 2019, the first junior college coach in the state of Louisiana to join the prestigious hall.
Scheuermann began his baseball career by watching his father coach from a young age and by playing New Orleans playground ball. Scheuermann went on to attend Redemptorist High School in New Orleans and played under legendary prep coach Wilfred “Skeeter” Theard.Scheuermann developed into a three-year starter for the Rams at second base, twice earning all district honors. He was team captain of Redemtorist’s final team in 1980, which claimed the Class 2A State Championship.
Scheuermann went on to sign on to Delgado’s program in the fall of 1980 under his father. The Dolphins won two conference championships in 1981 and 1982. Scheuermann moved onto Tulane University in New Orleans under coach Joe Brockhoff. Scheuermann won the team’s leadership award and was team captain in 1984.
Following the completion of his college career, he went on to become one of Joe Brockhoff’s assistant coaches at Tulane, where he coach until 1990.
In 1990, Scheuermann’s father, “Rags” Scheuermann was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. During his induction speech, he announced his retirement and that his son, Joe, would take over the reigns for both the Delgado program and Scheuermann’s summer team, the New Orleans Boosters.
Scheuermann quickly made his mark at Delgado. His 1992 Dolphins were ranked number 10 in the nation for most of the season and finished the season with a 41-15 mark.
The success continued following the 1993 Delgado season, when the Dolphins captured the Miss-Lou conference championship, the first since the 1982 championship. The Dolphins would go on to win the Miss-Lou championship in 1996. In 1999, the Dolphins seized the Region XXIII Tournament Championship in Meridian, Mississippi. Scheuermann also received Coach of the Year honors. The Dolphins were Regional runners-up in 2002 and 2004. Scheuermann led the Dolphins to the 2007 NJCAA South Central District Championship, as well as an appearance at the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was also named 2007 Region XXIII Coach of the Year.
In 2016, Scheuermann coached the Dolphins to the program's 900th vicory under his leadership, coming with a victory at the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction. He also led the Dolphins to a 2016 Region XXIII Miss-Lou Championship, advancing to, and hosting, the South Central District Regional, the program's tenth appearance in the super regional over the past eleven seasons. The team captured the South Central District title and a berth in the 2016 JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. The 2016 Dolphins were ranked in each of the National Junior College Athletic Association's national polls during the season.
After successfully guiding the program through the pandemic, the Dolphins returned to Grand Junction in 2023 and finished fifth in the nation.
In 2024, Delgado captured the Region XXIII Title (seventeenth since 2006) and berth in the South Central District Championship before closing the season as the South Central District runner-up, one game shy of the Junior College World Series.
Stressing the importance of academics, one hundred and forty one student-athletes have earned their Delgado degree since 2014. During the Fall 2024 semester, the athletic department amassed a 3.41 cumulative grade point average.
Taking advantage of its rich baseball legacy, Delgado continues to serve as a stepping stone and training experience for the next level. Under Scheuermann’s leadership, the Dolphin program has sent more than two hundred seventy players to Division I baseball programs throughout Louisiana and the nation. Over the past ten years, 29 former Dolphins have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft.
From 1990-2007, Scheuermann has also coached the New Orleans Boosters annual entry in the All-American Amatuer Baseball Association each summer. Under Scheuermann’s leadership, the Boosters captured three championships and were tournament runners-up four times. In 2007, he was inducted into the AAABA Hall of Fame.
In July 2013, he succeeded Tommy Smith as Delgado's Athletic Director following Smith's retirement after more than thirty years of service. Scheuermann is the college's third athletic director in its history, the first being his father, "Rags".
Scheuermann was born on October 15, 1962 in New Orleans. He is married to the former Shelly Faust. Shelly’s father, the late Jean Faust was also a local baseball fixture until his death in 1998. Joe and Shelly are the parents of Tyler, a member of the Delgado staff and Nataly, a teacher. The family resides in New Orleans, less than a mile from Delgado's campus.
