Winning Ways in Wesson

Delgado continued its weekend road trip to Wesson, Missisippi for a split doubleheader against host Copiah-Lincoln and Kellogg Community College…

In the first game, Delgado took an early lead over host Copiah-Lincoln with a 2-RBI double by Angelo Bruno in the top of the 1st, scoring Sean McMullen and Daniel Brockhoeft who had both reached on walks. Brady Williamson’s solo homerun in the 4th and two-RBI single in the 5th expanded the Delgado lead before Copiah-Lincoln scored two in the sixth to tie things up 5-5. The Dolphins broke the tie in the top of the last when Tony Fortier-Bensen’s walk scored Daniel Brockhoeft. Jake Fryman’s 2-RBI single would score two additional runs before a fielder’s choice forced Delgado’s ninth run to cross the plate. The Wolfpack would threaten reliever Corey Thomas’ lead with three runs in the bottom of the 7th before Tre’ Girod retired the game’s final two batters to earn the save and secure Delgado’s 9-8 win. Starter Pierce Liberta earned the win on the mound, pitching six complete.

Four Delgado runs crossed the plate in the first inning of the second game against Kellogg following a two-RBI single by Logan Jones, who would later score on a wild pitch. Tony Fortier-Bensen’s single allowed Brady Williamson (who had walked) to score. Delgado would expand its lead significantly in the 3rd, scoring seven runs on four hits, including double-RBI singles by Sean McMullen and Daniel Brockhoeft. Brockhoeft would score on an error by the second baseman. Jake Fryman’s solo homerun in the 4th expanded the Delgado lead to 12-2. In total, the Dolphin offense would combine for twelve hits in the game, earning the 14-9 victory over Kellogg. John DeArmond earned the win with Cody Deckwa in relief on the mound.

With the wins, Delgado closes the weekend 3-1 and improves its overall record to 8-5. The Dolphins will travel to Orlando this Wednesday to participate in the 2012 Disney Baseball Spring Warm-Up at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
