Delgado wins two against LSU-Eunice

Two of the top JUCO teams in the country met Friday as Delgado hosted LSU-Eunice in a non-conference doubleheader at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium...

In the first game, LSU-E carried a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning, when Delgado plated four runs on RBI singles by Frankie Watts and Austin Barrois a double by Josh Watkins. The Bengals tied an retook to the lead in the eighth when they batted around to combine for five runs on four hits to take a 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning, with two outs, Delgado also batted around to post eight runs on seven hits, including doubles by Josh Watkins, Cole Freeman, and Cody Ducote and singles by Jordan Caillouet, Troy Lewis, Bryce Adams, and Frankie Watts as Delgado took a 12-8 lead and the eventual victory. Reliever Clay Tageant (5-0) earned the win on the mound in relief of starting pitcher Chase Hymel, who exited the game with two outs in the eighth inning. Scott Stonestreet closed the game, retiring the final three Bengal batters in the ninth inning.

In the second game, Delgado plated a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Troy Lewis, which scored Austin Barrois who reached on a leadoff walk. LSU-Eunice tied the game on an RBI single. Eunice took a brief one run lead in the top of the fifth before the Dolphins batted around to score six runs on four hits, including a grand slam by Josh Watkins. Eunice scored a final run in the seventh on a groundout, scoring Derek Herrington who reached base with a double to close the scoring and give Delgado the 10-4 win and the doubleheader sweep. Delgado starter Brooks Vial earned his seventh win of the season, pitching the complete game.

The two teams will meet at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Kirsch-Rooney in the third game of the weekend series.

Delgado was ranked eighth in this week's NJCAA Division I poll. LSU-Eunice is currently ranked second in the Division II poll.
