Box Score Delgado Community College defeated Meridian 6-1 Sunday night to capture the 2014 NJCAA Region XXIII Division I Title. The game, which lasted thirteen innings, broke open in the top of the 13th inning when Cole Freeman reached on a leadoff hit-by-pitch and advanced on a sacrifice. Josh Watkins and Austin Barrois were intentionally walked to load the bases before Chris Eades' infield single allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Josh Watkins scored from third on Cody Ducote's fielder's choice and a subsequent overthrow to the plate for Delgado's third run of the game. The next at-bat, Jordan Caillouet's base-clearing triple gave Delgado a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the 13th. The Eagles, however, did not go quietly as they worked to load the bases on a leadoff single, and two walks before a strikeout ended the game and lifted the Dolphins to the Region XXIII crown.Â
Delgado had scored their first run in the third inning on Cole Freeman's two-out walk and Josh Watkins' RBI single. The lead carried through the game until the 8th inning when the Eagles plated a run to tie the game...the tie that would carry for the next five innings until the Dolphin outburst in the thirteenth inning. Delgado starter Jordan Priddle pitched seven and a third innnings, with Jonathan Ebersole and Scott Stonestreet appearing in relief. Stonestreet got the win on the mound, pitching five innings and escaping several jams, allowing no runs in relief. Jonathan Mayeaux earned the save by facing the final batter of the game with bases loaded and the tying run of the game.Â
With Sunday's victory, Delgado advances to the South Central District Championship, the NJCAA-equivalent of a super regional, to be hosted by Region XVI champion Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri next weekend with the winner advancing to the Junior College World Series. This marks Delgado's eighth Region XXIII Title in the past nine seasons.
