Baseball opens season with sweep of Bishop State

Delgado swept Bishop State Community College in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as the Dolphins kicked off their 2015 campaign at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

In game one, Bryce opened the scoring with a two-run homerun to score Cody Ducote (who reached on a single) and Troy Lewis (reached on being hit by pitch)for the first runs of the season. Cole Freeman reached base on a leadoff single in the second and scored on a wild pitch. Delgado picked up two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth enroute to their 7-2 win over Bishop State. Bishop's two runs came in the fifth inning following two doubles and an RBI single. Delgado starter Brooks Vial pitched four innings, striking out ten, walking one, and allowing only 2 hits. Jonathan Ebersole appeared in relief, striking out five.

In the second game, Bishop State struck early with two runs in the first inning following three singles. Delgado cut the lead in half in the second on Owen Magee's sacrifice fly, which scored Bryce Adams (who led off with a single). The Wildcats picked up two additional runs in the fourth before Delgado cut the Bishop lead to a run following Cole Freeman's two run homerun. The Dolphins picked up two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to close in on the 7-5 victory. Spencer Veit picked up the win in relief of starter Andrew Mitchell and reliever Logan Trent. Connor McWilliams earned the save, facing five batters in the seventh inning. 

Delgado (2-0) will host Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday in a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
