Delgado drops to Mineral Area, defeats Pensacola 5-3

Delgado split its Saturday doubleheader in Pensacola, falling to Mineral Area 2-0 before defeating Pensacola State 5-3 in a late inning rally.

In the first game, the game's only runs came in the fourth inning when Mineral Area's Ryan Bouse reached second base on a Delgado error, advanced on a flyball, and scored on a sacrifice fly. Mineral's second run scored when Grant Dix reached on an error and scored on Ben Teter's double. Delgado was held to only four hits as the Dolphins dropped the 2-0 decision. Laine Fontenot pitched the complete game for Delgado, pitching seven innings and allowing only three hits and striking out four.

In game two, Delgado scored the game's first run in the first when Robbie Podorsky scored on bases loaded walk by Christian Clayton. Pensacola State tied the game in the third inning on a two-out, RBI single by Drake Cabe. The following inning, Pensacola's back-to-back doubles added another run as the Pirates took a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, Delgado's Owen Magee and Spencer Miller reached on back-to-back singles and scored on JP LaGreco's homerun shot to leftfield. Chip Bonura walked and scored on a single by Podorsky for a fifth Dolphin run. Pensacola State threatened briefly in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a solo run on Aaron Kubal's sacrifice fly before a strikeout ended the game. Connor Whalen earned his first win of the year on the mound for Delgado in relief of starter Evan Hileman, who went five innings for Delgado.

The Dolphins will face Rend Lake College at 10:00 a.m. Sunday to close the weekend.
