Baton Rouge edges Delgado 12-10 in Game 5 of Series

Baton Rouge Community College edged Delgado 12-10 Saturday in Game 5 of the 2016 Region XXIII Championship Series at Zephyr Field in Metairie. The game, a back-and-forth contest, saw a combined 22 runs on 32 hits over its nine innings.

Delgado got on the board first with JP LaGreco's RBI single in the third inning, scoring Brandt Broussard, who also reached on a single. Baton Rouge answered with a five run, five hit fourth inning to take the 5-1 lead. The Dolphins added three in the bottom of the fourth when Christian Volion reached on an error and Christian Clayton singled before both scored on a triple by Brandt Broussard. Broussard scored a fourth Dolphin run on a wild pitch to cut the BRCC lead to a run through four complete.

In the fifth, Baton Rouge's John Mauldin doubled to open the inning and scored on a single by Aidan Hodges to increase the lead to two runs. In the bottom of the inning, JP LaGreco led off with a double and scored on a single by Dylan Weston. Weston advanced on a single by Christian Volion and scored on a double by Christian Clayton. Clayton and Broussard went on to score on a single by Brandt Broussard as Delgado took an 8-6 lead through five innings.
Baton Rouge added two runs in the sixth to tied the game at eight on a two-run double by Layton Laird. Delgado answered when JP LaGreco walked, advanced on a single by Spencer Miller, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Weston to give the Dolphins the lead. Baton Rouge's Aidan Hodges was hit by a pitch to open the seventh, advanced on a wild pitch and a single, and scored on a single by Blake Buller. Delgado took a one-run lead in the bottom frame when Ty Thompson opened the inning with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Brandt Broussard and a wild pitch, and scoring on a Bear error.

In the eighth, Baton Rouge's Aidan Hodges' sacrifice fly plated Layton Laird (who reached on a single) for the Bears tenth and tying run. The Bears capitalized on a three-up, three-down Delgado eighth and added two go-ahead runs in the ninth following back-to-back two-out singles and a walk, followed by a two-run single by John Mauldin to give the Bears the 12-10 lead. Delgado left one runner on in the bottom of the ninth enroute to the Bears 12-10 win.

Delgado's Christian Latino (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season on the mound, pitching the final two innings in relief of starter Bryce Guidry (3.1 innings) and relievers CJ Avrard (.2), Trevin Stein (.1), Spencer Veit (.2), Seth Dreux (.1), and Laine Fontenot (.2).

The Region XXIII Series will conclude Sunday at Zephyr Field. Game 6 will begin at 1:00 with an If-Necessary Game 7 to follow if necessary. Delgado currently leads the best-of-seven-game series 3-2.
