Delgado overcomes Pensacola in 9th Inning Win

Delgado overcame a Pensacola State threat in the late innings of Sunday’s series finale in Pensacola, FL defeating Pensacola 8-7 in the last inning…

Delgado took an early lead 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI hits by Daniel Brockhoeft and Angelo Bruno before Pensacola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. The Dolphins regained and maintained the lead, scoring two runs in the second with Jake Fryman’s 2-RBI homerun (which scored Tony Fortier-Bensen who had reached base on a single.) Fortier-Bensen and Fryman would reach base and score again in the fourth inning following RBI-singles by Bubby Riley and Angelo Bruno.

Gavin Patton’s RBI-single in the fifth scored the Pirates’ third run of the game in the fifth inning. Pensacola would score two additional runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the score 7-7, the tying run crossing the plate on Taylor Eads’ RBI-double to leftfield.

Angelo Bruno led off the 9th with a single to leftfield and pinch runner George Bliss scored the game’s deciding run on Tony Fortier-Bensen’s double. Bruno and Fortier-Bensen each finished the day 3 for 5. Brandon Shearman retired the Pirate offense in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the 8-7 Delgado win. Shearman (1-0) replaced Taylor Migliore, who had entered the game in relief of starter Corey Thomas, who pitched six complete innings.

Delgado improves to 5-4 on the season and will face Northwest Florida State College on Wednesday at the University of South Alabama.
