Delgado’s 2012 campaign came to an abrupt close on Friday following two losses in the Opening round of the 2012 South Central District Regionals as the Dolphins fell to Eastern Oklahoma and host Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri.
In the first game, Eastern Oklahoma took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on the benefit of two unearned runs. The Dolphins rallied for a two-run second before the Mountaineers scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Eastern Oklahoma added two additional runs in the fourth and fifth for an 8-2 lead. Delgado mounted a mini-rally by scoring one run in the seventh on an infield error but two runners stranded on base to end the inning. The Dolphins added three runs on three hits in the top of the ninth following a two-RBI double by Angelo Bruno and an RBI-single by Cameron Hoffman. The Dolphins had the tying run on first with no outs but could not score after Cameron Hoffman was picked off of first base. The Mountaineers were able to strike out and force a ground out to end the game 8-6. Pierce Liberta picked up his third loss of the season on the mound.
In game two, Delgado took its first lead of the day in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits, including a triple by Brady Williamson and RBI-singles by Sean McMullen and Angelo Bruno. The lead would be short lived as Jefferson College posted five runs in the third after the first two batters were retired. The Vikings added seven runs in the fourth (on three hits) to take a 13-4 lead halfway through the game. Delgado picked up two runs in its sixth inning when Luke Voiron and Sean McMullen reached on singles and scored on a walk and sacrifice fly. Jefferson College scored three runs in the bottom of the same inning on back to back RBI-doubles. The final run ended the game 16-6 by virtue of the ten run rule. Corey Thomas received the loss as the Dolphin starter.
With the losses, Delgado closes its 2012 season 30-22 overall, representing the college as Region XXIII Champion at its sixth South Central District Regional over the past seven seasons.
