Dolphins fall in 8-6 Series opener

GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO - It was a Junior College World Series match-up that had everyone talking and the game certainly didn't disappoint. Nationally ranked #2 Delgado met #1 Chattahooche Valley in the feature game in the opening round of the the 2014 JUCO World Series at Sam Suplizio Field. A back-and-forth game, Delgado took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning before Chattahooche Valley plated four runs in the inning for an eventual 8-6 comeback win. 

Chattahooche Valley struck first in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on Jared Martin's triple. Martin crossed the plate on a groundout the following at bat as the Pirates took a temporary 3-0 lead. In the top of the second, Chris Eades led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a single by Austin Barrois. Jordan Caillouet's three-run homerun to leftfield cleared the bases and tied the game at three a piece. In the bottom of the 3rd, Trevor Kieboom's RBI single allowed Chattahooche to take the game's 4-3 lead. In the 5th, Bryce Adams reached on a leadoff triple and scored on Cole Freeman's groundout to tie things up 4-4. Delgado took its first lead of the night in the 8th, when Austin Barrois reached on a leadoff walk and scored on Troy Lewis' double. Lewis advanced to third when Bryce Adams reached base on an infield error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole Freeman as Delgado took a 6-4 lead.

The tide changed in the bottom of the same inning when the Pirates posted four runs on four hits, starting with Cam Sperry's two-run homerun, which scored Jared Martin. Grayson Ivey reached base on an infield error and scored on Tyler Lynn's double the following at bat. Lynn later scored on the throwdown during a dropped third strike. Delgado threatened by loading the bases in the top of the ninth reaching on Cody Ducote's hit by pitch, Chris Eades' single, and Jordan Caillouet's walk. A groundout ended the game as Chattachooche Valley defeated Delgado 8-6. Scott Stonestreet (5-3) got the loss in relief of starter Chase Hymel, who pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, two walks, and striking out six. Bryce Adams led the Dolphins offensively, going 3-4 with a single, a double, and a triple.
