Box Score Delgado defeated Baton Rouge Community College 9-3 Saturday afternoon at Zephyr Field to capture the 2015 Region XXIII Division I Championship.
Baton Rouge scored the first run of the game in third inning when Zachary McCown led off the inning with a double, advanced on Steven Bright's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Nicholas Morgan's sacrifice fly to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Garrett Shano's lead-off walk jump started a eight run offensive outburst for Delgado. Shano later advanced on singles by Cole Freeman and Troy Lewis and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Cody Ducote. Freeman and Lewis scored on a two-RBI single by Bryce Adams, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Owen Magee. Freeman's second at-bat of the inning plated Christian Volion and Devin Morrill, who reached on a walk and single respectively as Delgado went ahead 8-1.
Cody Ducote led off the eighth inning with a single before Owen Magee's single plated Delgado's ninth run of the game. In the bottom frame, Baton Rouge's Nicholas Morgan led off the inning with a walk, advanced on a single by Mark Traylor, and scored on a Delgado error. Traylor plated a third Bear run on Logan Rogers' single.
Reliever Laine Fontenot retired Baton Rouge in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game as Delgado walked away with the 9-3 victory and the Region XXIII title. Fontenot entered the game to start the ninth in relief of Jarett Gongora, who pitched 1.2 innings following starter Andrew Mitchell's 6.1 innings of work. Mitchell earned his seventh win of the season, allowing a run on five hits while walking two and striking out one.
With the win, Delgado advances to the NJCAA South Central District Championship Tournament, to be hosted by the Region II Champion on May 15-17. This year's Region XXIII Title marks Delgado's sixth consecutive title and ninth title over the past ten seasons.
Delgado and Baton Rouge will play a single, 9-inning game on Sunday at 5:00 at Zephyr Field to conclude the Region XXIII Championship Series.
