NEW ORLEANS – Delgado and Baton Rouge Community College opened conference play with a bang Saturday as the Dolphins outlasted the Bears 13-10 in front of a large crowd at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
Daniel Lahare opened Delgado's first frame with an RBI double, scoring Tyler St. Philip who reached on a leadoff walk. Lahare advanced on a single by Owen Magee and scored on a passed ball for the Dolphins to take a 2-0 lead. Baton Rouge countered in the second by scoring four runs on singles by Layton Laird, William Mouton, and Devin Bailey and a double by Kevin VanAsselberg. Tyler LaPorte reached on an error and Bailey went on to score on another infield error as the Bears took a 4-2 lead.
Delgado picked up a run in the third to cut the BRCC lead to a run on a double by Spencer Miller, scoring Owen Magee who doubled to reach base. Baton Rouge added a run on Kevin VanAsselberg's single to score Devin Bailey, who reached on a triple to make for a 5-3 Bear lead.
The Dolphins pieced together a four-run-fourth inning when Christian Clayton and Brandt Broussard reached on back-to-back walks, advanced on a wild pitch, and scoring on a single by Tyler St. Philip. St. Philip advanced when Owen Magee reached on a Baton Rouge error and scored on a single by JP LaGreco. Magee would score on an error the same play for Delgado to take a 7-5 lead.
In the sixth, Baton Rouge added three in the sixth following RBI singles by Aiden Hodges and John Mauldin and two additional runs in the seventh to take a 10-7 lead.
In the Delgado seventh, Spencer Miller, Dylan Weston, and Christian Volion all reached with one-out singles to load the bases. Christian Clayton scored two runs on a double before Tyler St. Philip's sacrifice fly scored Volion to tie the game 10-10. Lahare reached on an infield error to score Clayton before another error during the same play plated Broussard to give the Dolphins the lead. Lahare scored on a single by Owen Magee for the final run of inning and of the game as the Bears were retired in the final two innings to lift Delgado to the 13-10 win.
Laine Fontenot picked up the win in relief of Delgado starter Evan Hileman, who pitched five innings. Both Delgado hurlers combined for twelve Bear strikeouts.
Delgado (28-12, 1-0) and Baton Rouge will meet at 3:00 Sunday at Pete Goldby Field in Baton Rouge for game two of the best-of-seven Region XXIII conference series. The winner advances to the South Central District Regional next month.
