Delgado claims 2016 South Central District Title, JUCO World Series berth

NEW ORLEANS -- The Delgado Dolphins are the NJCAA South Central District Champions. Again. The team secured the program's third consecutive District title and third consecutive berth in the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado with their 11-4 victory over Maple Woods Community College Sunday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The first runs of the game came in the second inning when Spencer Miller singled and advanced when Dylan Weston and Christian Volion reached on infield errors. Weston scored on a single by Brandt Broussard and Volion scored on Tyler Thompson's sacrifice fly. Robbie Podorsky reached on another Maple Woods error, which also scored Broussard as Delgado took the early 4-0 lead. The next inning, Dylan Weston's two-run homerun over the leftfield wall plated Spencer Miller to expand the lead  to six.

Maple Woods' first run came in the fourth when Tyler Cox reached on a single and scored on an outfield error following Will Jibas' single.

In the fifth, Dylan Weston's sacrifice fly scored Owen Magee, who reached on an error to open the frame, making for a 7-1 ballgame. Maple Woods added two in the sixth following a leadoff walk and a double by Will Jibas.  Jibas scored on the throw following Jake Perry's single.

Delgado added four runs in the sixth following a leadoff single by Brandt Broussard, who scored on Robbie Podorsky's double. Owen Magee singled to score Podorsky. JP LaGreco walked and scored with Magee on Spencer Miller's double.

In the ninth, Maple Woods added a fourth and final Monarch run with a two-out, solo homerun before Delgado reliever Christian Latino retired the final out to end the game as Delgado walked away with the 11-4 win and the South Central District Title.

Starter Spencer Veit got the win, pitching 5.1 innings with Adam Sinibaldi appearing 3.1 innings in relief before Christian Latino entered for the final out.

With the victory, Delgado (36-14) advances to the 2016 JUCO Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. The trip marks the fifth in program history, the fourth in the past decade, and the third consecutive for the Dolphins.

The 2016 win marks the first time that the program has secured the title at home at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Delgado will open play in the 59th World Series in the 7:30 (MST) feature game on Opening Night, Saturday, May 28, facing Western District Champion Yavapai College (Arizona).
