Delgado defeated Nunez Community College 14-10 Sunday at Noel Suarez Stadium, revenging a Saturday doubleheader sweep by the Pelicans.
Delgado batted around in the first inning, posting six runs on six hits including a two run homerun by Rhett Centanni, an RBI double by Eli Booth, a two run homerun by Frank Randol, and an RBI single by Cooper Dailey to take a 6-0 lead. A single by Everett Denny scored Josh Hoffmann in the second. The offense continued to shine in the third when Eli Booth walked with the bases loaded to plate Reed Duthu before Frank Randol's grand slam put the Dolphins ahead 12-1. Nunez's Cohen Veron homered in the second and Conner Stelly's two run homer in the fourth added three before a single and an error allowed a fourth run to score. Nunez chipped away by addeing one in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two runs in the eighth to threaten the Dolphin lead. Delgado countered with a run in the eighth following Jack Marcantel's walk and a single and error to score the run. A solo homerun by Eli Booth in the ninth plated the fourteenth run enroute to the Dolphins' 14-4 win. Michael Hotard pitched into the sixth to earn the win with Morgan Sauber and Brady Schmidt closing the game with Schmidt earning the save.
The victory marked Head Coach Joe Scheuermann's 1200th win as Delgado Head Coach. Now in his 35th season, Scheuermann expands his record as the winningest college baseball coach in Louisiana history, having surpassed the late Coach Tony Robichaux's 1,177 win record last May. Scheuermann eclipsed the 1,000 win mark in April 2019 to become the first college baseball coach in Louisiana history to reach the milestone at the same college. He was inducted into the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame later that summer.
Scheuermann succeed his father and program founder "Rags" Scheuermann as Delgado's Head Coach in 1990 and will be inducted alongside him in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame later this June. Coach Joe's 1200th win ironically fell on April 13, what would have been "Rags" Scheuermann's 102nd birthday. In his postgame remarks, Scheuermann credits his current and former players for the record, expanding on the important role that family plays in the program year after year.
On learning of Sunday's record win, Delgado Chancellor Larissa Littleton-Steib adds "Our Delgado family shares its immense pride and congratulations as Coach Scheuermann marks his 1,200th win as Delgado's Head Coach, expanding his record-setting tenure with the Dolphins. We're grateful to Coach for representing the college at a local and national level while continuing to impact the lives of our student-athletes and their families. We look forward to celebrating his induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame this summer."
Scheuermann adds. "As I have said many times, I didn't win any of these games, my players did. I want to thank each and every player, assistant coach and everyone that has been involved in our program. This is a team honor not an individual one. Delgado will host Baton Rouge Community College this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at "Rags" Scheuermann Field at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium as conference play continues.
