Dolphins sweep Bears in Saturday’s Region XXIII doubleheader

Delgado swept Baton Rouge Community College in Saturday's Region XXIII Conference doubleheader at "Rags" Scheuermann Field at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, defeating the Bears 6-1 and 12-2.

In game one, Baton Rouge took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first following a leadoff walk, single, and pair of wild pitches. Delgado's Everett Denny doubled in the bottom of the inning to plate the tying run in Gavin Kennedy, who led off the inning with a single. Jack Marcantel singled in the second, scoring on a double by Joe Monaghan to give Delgado the lead. Monaghan scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Kennedy to expand to a 3-1 game. In the third, Riley Rowell walked to open the frame, advanced on a Denny single and stolen base, and scored on a groundout by Sebastian Rhoades. Delgado added solo runs in the fifth and sixth on RBI singles by Cooper Burch and Everett Denny enroute to Delgado's 6-1 win over Baton Rouge. Starting pitcher Aidan Grab went the distance, pitching seven innings, allowing four hits, one run, and striking out six.

Riley Rowell's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first plated Gavin Kennedy for the game's first run. Baton Rouge's Hudson Heltz homered in the second to tie the game 1-1. In the bottom of the second, Sebastian Rhoades' solo home run gave Delgado the 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Baton Rouge's Ben Switzer reached on a leadoff double, advanced on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch to even the game 2-2. The Delgado fifth saw fifteen Dolphins at the plate, including a grand slam from Sebastian Rhoades to give Delgado the four run lead. Three consecutive walks and three straight hits combined for four additional runs to expand the lead to eight runs through five innings. Delgado plated two additional runs in the sixth, including the game-ending twelfth run crossing the plate on a walk off single by Frank Randol to lift Delgado to the 12-2 mercy rule victory. Jordan Oberle picked up the win on the mound in relief of starter Brandon Kragle, who pitched four innings. Oberle retired all six Bear batters he faced in his two innings of work.

Delgado (24-11, 9-2) will meet Baton Rouge in a single game at 1pm Sunday to close the four game weekend series at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
