Delgado defeated Nunez Community College 15-3 in five innings Friday evening to open the four-game conference set at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette.
Back-to-back Dolphin doubles by Gavin Kennedy and Frank Randol in the first two at-bats of the game put Delgado on top 1-0. A bases-loaded walk by Jack Marcantel plated second run. In the Nunez second, a solo homerun by Conner Stelly cut the lead in half before a groundout plated Cody Breaux, who reached as a hit batter and advanced on a wild pitch and single, to tie the game 2-2. Dominick Letort walked to lead off the third, advanced on two additional walks, and scored on a hit batter to retake the lead. In the fourth, Delgado sent thirteen batters to the plate to combine for nine runs on six hits, including two homers (one a grand slam) in the same inning by Gavin Kennedy for a total of five RBIs. Sebatian Rhoades drove in two runs on a single and Cooper Burch drove in one run on a fielder's choice. A second Conner Stelly homerun in the fourth scored the third Pelican run. In the fifth, Cooper Burch tripled to score two runs and advanced home on an outfield overthrow for Delgado's fifteenth and final run enroute to the 15-3 mercy rule in five innings. Giancarlo Arencibia went the distance on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven.
Delgado and Nunez will meet in a 2pm doubleheader Saturday at Suarez Stadium. The games will air on 106.7 FM The Ticket.
