Dolphins open 2024 season with Tuesday split with Copiah-Lincoln

Delgado opened its 2024 campaign Tuesday, hosting Copiah-Lincoln in a doubleheader at "Rags" Scheuermann Field at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

In the first game, Copiah-Lincoln scored two runs in the top of the first before the Dolphins batted around in the bottom of the inning, combining for four runs on two hits, including a two run double by Hayden Kibbe and a sacrifice fly by Josh Eames. The Dolphins' first run of the season came on a bases loaded walk by Eli Booth that scored Logan O'Neill, who reached on a walk. Back-to-back Wolfpack homeruns in the second tied the game at four. Delgado took the lead in the fourth when Christian Westcott doubled and scored on a single by Jack Walker. Copiah-Lincoln added two in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and RBI single and two in the seventh on a two run single to secure the 8-5 win over the Dolphins. Michael Hotard suffered the loss pitching the final 2.1 innings in relief of starter Luke Barbier (2.0) and Josh Pierce (2.2).

In game two, the Delgado offense combined for twenty-two runs on fourteen hits in a decisive 22-9 win over Copiah-Lincoln. Jack Walker's double in the first scored Casey Artigues. Walker scored on an error for a second run. Co-Lin took a 3-2 lead before a seven run Delgado outburst in the second, highlighted by a three run homerun by Preston Scott to give Delgado the lead. An additional seven runs in the third and six in the fourth helped lift the Dolphins the five inning mercy rule win and the doubleheader split. Connor Achee picked up his first win of the season on the mound with Alex Laiche closing the final two innings in relief.

The program recognized the 2023 NJCAA South Central District Champions by presenting their World Series rings between the two games.

Delgado (1-1) will return to action next Thursday, hosting Bryant & Stratton and Pensacola State College in the four-day "Rags" Scheuermann Memorial Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
