Walker's walkoff lifts Delgado to 5-4 win, Scheuermann sets state win record

OXFORD, ALABAMA – Jack Walker's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth plated Walker Bazile to lift Delgado to a 5-4 walkoff win over Coastal Alabama South Community College in Game 8 of the 2024 NJCAA South District Tournament at Choccolocco Park.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Delgado posted three runs on four hits in the sixth inning, including a two run single by Logan O'Neill to tie the game and a two out, RBI single by Giovanni Licciardi to give the Dolphins a one run lead. A wild pitch in the top of the seventh plated Coastal's Devon Murphy to tie the game 4-4. The tie held until the bottom of the ninth when Giovanni led off the inning with a walk, Walker Bazile singled, Casey Artigues was intentionally walked and Rhett Centanni grounded into a fielder's choice to load the bases before Jack Walker's sacrifice fly ended the game. Blaise Lalonde picked up he win, pitching the final two innings in relief of starter Remy Marsh (4.0), Josh Pierce (3.2) and Kyle St. Pierre (.1).

The win marks Delgado Head Coach Joe Scheuermann's 1178th career victory at Delgado, surpassing the state collegiate win record previously held by the late Tony Robichaux (McNeese State, University of Louisiana-Lafayette). Scheuermann celebrated his 1000th win against Coastal Alabama South on April 9, 2019 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, then becoming the first coach is state history to reach the 1000 win milestone at the same college.

In postgame comments when asked about the record, Scheuermann said "It means a lot. Somebody gave me a chance. We've had some great players and some great coaches that got me there. I didn't win 1178…my teams won 1178. I thank God for the opportunity, my family, Delgado, and most of all I thank my players."

Scheuermann succeeded his father and program founder "Rags" Scheuermann in July 1990, becoming the second coach in program history. Over the thirty four seasons that have followed, Scheuermann's teams have captured nineteen conference titles and fourteen consecutive super regional berths. He has led five teams to the NJCAA Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, most recently in 2023. He is a 2019 inductee in the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the same season he earned the 1000th win milestone.

With Saturday's win, Delgado (40-14) will face #1-seeded Shelton State Sunday at 11am in the tournament's driver's seat game. The game will be broadcast on delgadoathletics.com and The Ticket, 106.1 FM.
