Delgado claims Region XXIII Title with 9-7 win over Nunez

Delgado defeated Nunez Community College 9-7 Friday to capture the 2024 NJCAA Region XXIII Division I Championship, the program's fourteenth straight region title.

Nunez took an early 3-0 lead in the first before Delgado answered by tying the score in the third following an RBI single by Eli Booth and a two run sacrifice fly by Logan O'Neill. Nunez added a fourth run on Jayce Lacava's RBI single in the third. Delgado reached on back to back walks by Giovanni Licciardi and Walker Bazile in the fourth, plating the tying run on a bases loaded walk by Jack Walker and the go-ahead run on a bases loaded balk. A sacrifice fly by Casey Artigues plated a sixth Delgado run in the fifth. In the seventh, Christian Westcott singled to score Logan O'Neill, who walked to lead off the inning before stealing second. Giovanni Licciardi and Walker Bazile both walked before Licciardi scored on a wild pitch and Bazile scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Walker to expand the lead to 9-4. Nunez rallied in the eighth with four hits on two outs, including a RBI double by Dorien Jackson and a two run single by Colin Cure to narrow the Delgado lead to 9-7 before reliever Brady Schmidt ended the threat, lifting the Dolphins to their 9-7 win. Blaise Lalonde picked up the win on the mound in relief of starter Connor Achee, who went 2.2 innings. Schmidt earned the save.

WIth the win, Delgado (38-14) swept the tournament with three wins over Baton Rouge and Nunez and will earn the region's top seed in the NJCAA South District Championship to be hosted in Oxford, Alabama May 9-13. Nunez advances as the Region XXIII runner-up.

The 2024 Region XXIII title marks the program's fourteenth consecutive region championship and district super regional berth and seventeenth in the past eighteen seasons.
